Google Product Search
Integrating products that you sell online with Google Product Search is a great way to boost your sales. It enables shoppers to find your products on Google Product Search services, together with other shop owners e-commerce products. It works pretty much like Google search engine but exclusively for product search, hence a very apt name.
From a web developer point of view, this is done by creating an XML feed and placing it onto the Google Merchant Centre. XML data feed can be of RSS2.0 or RSS1.0 format and it also must have attributes that are specified by the Google, such as the state of the product, is it new or used, unique id for the product etc. More info on the feed format can be found at Google Merchant web page.
There is an option of creating a data feed using a CSV file, which may look simpler to do, for a non programmer, but it is far more difficult to keep a track of when the number of products goes over thirty, forty or so. This is because CSV files can be created manually, while for an typically longer XML file you need a data base application to do it properly.
By finding your products on the Google Product Search, your customers are provided with a link to your website page where that product is listed. More clicks also mean that your page gets more traffic and gets a boost in the rankings as a result.
There are other shopping comparison sites such as Kelkoo, e-Bay and Amazon and they use similar XML data feeds to integrate products from e-commerce websites to their product search services.
